Everyone knows students at Fisher play football, basketball and other typical, well-known sports.
What about other sports? The sports no one knows about. Sports played by individuals as unique as the games they play.
One of these sports is called Ultimate Frisbee. It already has a large following in the Rochester area and is still growing.
A major advocate for the game is Kathleen Costello from the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures.
Ultimate Frisbee combines skills from multiple sports.
"The game is a combination of the fast paced movement of soccer, the passing and aerial game of football, and the defense of basketball," Costello said.
Costello first started playing Ultimate Frisbee as a graduate student at the University of Iowa. She immediately joined a women's club team and played for three years.
"I tried it and I got addicted," Costello said.
After finishing school, Costello played on a number of different teams. She played on women's as well as co-ed club teams in the Rochester area and even participated in the Club National Championships in Florida.
"The championships are my favorite," Costello said. "We play the best teams from around the country and the level of play is very high. Also, it's fun to relax at the beach right after you play."
Although most people do not know much about the sport, there is a stereotype that might cause those who do know about it to see it negatively.
"People think of it as hippies throwing Frisbees to their dogs," she said. "There are over one million players in the United States, and Rochester has an organized, year-round league."
Costello plays whenever possible and hopes to help start a club team here at Fisher.
Another interesting sport Fisher students are playing is called Extreme Wall Ball. Senior Caleb Norton is responsible for bringing the experience to Fisher's campus.
Norton says the game is a combination of dodgeball, handball, wall ball, and racquetball.
He created the game with his friends from home and actually played their first game in a girls' locker room.
