Whether you are by yourself or with your sweetheart this Valentine's Day, these romantic movies are a perfect complement to a bag of buttery popcorn and a night spent cozy on the couch.

1. Love Story (1970)

You know that quote, "Love means never having to say you're sorry"? Well this movie is where it originated. Love Story was a box office success when it was first released and eventually grew into a classic. Ali McGraw and Ryan O'Neal play two college-age lovers whose intensely happy love affair takes an unexpected and extremely emotional turn, pulling on every viewer's heart strings. Most likely this movie was a favorite of at least one of your parents, so sit them down, nudge the box of tissues in between you and sit back for a lesson in history. The history of love, that is.

2. Pretty in Pink (1986)

Boy meets girl. Boy likes girl. Problem is, so does the girl's best friend. This blast from the past has catchy music and a believable love story with positive messages beyond the romance. Queen of the '80s scene, Molly Ringwald, stars as Andie, a girl from "the wrong side of the tracks" who attracts a rich, popular preppy named Blaine. This film has a great supporting cast with familiar faces such as Kristy Swanson, the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who makes a quick cameo at the end. Fun Fact? Screenwriter John Hughes, who is also responsible for Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, wrote Pretty in Pink with Molly Ringwald in mind for the lead.

3. The Other Sister (1999)

This movie is probably as sweet as romantic movies can get. Juliette Lewis does a fantastic job as Carla, a mentally challenged young woman desperate to gain a tiny bit of independence from her over controlling mother, played by Diane Keaton. On her quest for independence, she meets Daniel, a mentally challenged young man who loves marching bands and baking. Their story is refreshingly inspiring and shows us that there is indeed someone for everyone.

4. Love Actually (2003)

This is a romantic movie for guys and girls. I'm serious. It is not all kissing and puppy eyes. There are some cute and funny moments that will get a chuckle out of your most anti-romantic-movie friend. Love Actually is based in London and follows several characters whose lives are intertwined yet who are all dealing with their own trials of the heart. There is puppy love, adulterous love, forbidden love, secret love and even bilingual love. While it may not be a happy ending for all of the characters, you will be left with a warm feeling as the credits roll.

5. The Notebook (2004)

A list of romantic movies would not be complete without the tearjerker of tearjerkers. After its release, it was hard to go through your AIM buddy list without seeing at least one quote from this movie in an away message. The Notebook is a love story that spans a lifetime and leaves every girl saying, "I want a guy like Noah." It is the typical story of star-crossed lovers with every odd against them yet with a not-so-typical ending. A guy might cringe when he hears the title, or deny having ever seen it, but us girls know there is a copy of the movie hidden in his room, disguised with the hand-written title, Rambo.
