As college students we're often contemplating witty ways to make the next million dollar product. With the cost of tuition rising, the recent purchase of textbooks and spring break around the corner, let's face it, we're broke.
This quick buck concept was something that may have crossed Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg's mind, but it was never thought to be considered a multibillion dollar company that would one day have over 350 million users. The site was created by Zuckerberg and his Harvard roommates in 2003. The roommates decided they needed an organized system to meet college students on their campus; thus the creation of Facebook.
Originally available to only Harvard students, the site quickly opened up to Boston area colleges, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. Due to positive feedback and growing users, Zuckerberg and his roommates chose to make the site available to all college students and soon after anyone 13 years or older.
Facebook was once an outlet for daily stress, a way to stay in touch with old friends, and a system set up to "creep" on anyone your heart desired. Since the social network site has been available to every generation, the system has taken a best-seller plunge. Senior Bethany Griffith said, "Facebook has changed in both format and how people use it in everyday life."
Since Facebook's first generation, the site has taken numerous face-lifts. A structure that was simple to utilize, is now one that should come with a user's manual. The first generation of Facebook consisted of wall posts and photo albums. The second generation added status updates and chat. The third generation consisted of multiple applications and video messaging. Now it seems like Facebook is being revamped every few months.
When walking around Fisher's campus in the past you would see students chatting with friends or looking at pictures from their weekend festivities. Now you see little guys or girls running around the screen planting crops and harvesting eggs. Farmville some would say? Users receive numerous requests to drink a shot from their long lost friend's cousin's aunt. Aside from creating phenomenal agriculture and participating in the local virtual bar, you can also graffiti a picture or even check your horoscope.
Most MySpace users made the transition to Facebook because it was simple to use and easy to understand. Now the system of Facebook is more complicated than learning a new language. Just a heads up to all you Facebook users out there, if you haven't already done so, make the switch to Twitter. It takes ease and celebrity stalking to a whole new level.
