The last time these two teams met, only 20 days ago, Fisher went into halftime with a 53-21 lead and then won 87-43, a 44 point margin of victory.
The outlook was grim for a Hartwick team that had to play RIT the night before, and play on Fisher's court, a place the Cardinals usually meet success.
This game was equally important for both teams. Fisher needed to keep their number four spot in the conference and stay above .500 for the conference season. This loss makes the final eight games extremely important.
"We didn't play together, we didn't hustle, we didn't crash the boards" said junior guard Colleen Maloney. "To beat them at their place by 40 then come back home and play the way we played was inexcusable."
Hartwick was balancing at the middle of the pack, two games behind Fisher. They needed a win to keep their post season chances alive. A win at Fisher would certainly do that.
"This game was a morale booster and confidence builder," said Hartwick coach Missy West. "I hope the ladies can see what they are capable of."
The game started with minimal offense as both teams started out slow, attributed to the fact that they were coming off games the night before.
After nearly seven minutes of action it was only 9-7 Fisher. Then the game started to be a test of runs with Fisher taking an advantage and then Hartwick fighting back to take the lead.
Hartwick made the last of these runs taking a seven point lead into half-time with the score 28-21.
Fisher was down by seven, but they still could have regained the lead. It missed opportunities on lay-ups off offensive rebounds, something Fisher was dominating at the end of the half.
To top it off, their starting point guard and floor general, Stephanie Sweeney, was in foul trouble as she picked up her third with seven minutes to go in the half.
