Although the search-and-rescue effort has ended, St. John Fisher College, Nazareth College and the local community have decided to continue its outreach to Haiti.
The confirmed death toll has exceeded 150,000 and an estimated 609,000 people have been left homeless near Port-Au-Prince.
At Fisher, as part of its Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Jan. 18, the office of Multicultural Diversity and Affairs Programs were able to raise $540 as part of Fisher's Haiti Relief fund. All funds will be donated to Doctors Without Borders.
Several clubs and offices at the College have teamed up to work together including the Community Service Office, Multicultural Affairs and Diversity, Campus Life, Fisher Cru, Student Government Association and the ONE Campaign.
Fisher Cru and National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) partnered up with Student Government Association. Fisher Cru and NRHH made and cut out paper hands for "Hands for Haiti".
Individuals can donate a dollar or more to purchase a hand that will be displayed on windows outside of the Ward-Haffey Dining Hall.
"The main thing is we're working together," said Sally Vaughan, director of Community Service. "We're receptive to accepting other people from joining."
Vaughan said that student involvement in identifying an organization was important and that they have mobilized a group in case people are more comfortable with one group than another.
The ONE Campaign will have a table at Vagina Monologues, which is put on by Fisher Players to raise awareness about Haiti and women's struggles in impoverished nations.
