The only place to catch Philosophy Day in America is on the St. John Fisher campus. The 7th annual Philosophy Day will take place November 18 and 19, starting at 6:30 Wednesday and ending at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

In 2002 the U.N. made the third Thursday in November Philosophy Day. Fisher has been celebrating the day since it first started, in 2002.

Tim Madigan of the Philosophy department said, "we're really not sure why they chose that particular day, it doesn't seem to have any significance."

Several faculty from the philosophy, sociology, religious studies, and other departments will be giving presentations at the event. Organizers of the event try to get faculty from various departments who teach philosophy to participate.

This year's central idea is the Catholic tradition and John Fisher. The opening presentation will be given by Kathleen Riley, a professor from Ohio Dominican University. Riley's recent book details the life of a previous bishop in Rochester, Bishop Sheen, who is currently up for sainthood.

The main presentations will take place Thursday in the Golisano Midlevel Gateway. Madigan will present in the second round-table, the Roots of Catholic Education and in the third round-table, the Aesthetics. He will try to shed light onto John Fisher.
"Sadly I think most people here at fisher don't know anything about the person the school is named after, I think they should at least know who he was," said Madigan.
Michael Constazo is presenting in the third round-table Aesthetics. His piece is entitled, "The Day of Judgment in Matthew 25 Michelangelo, Cherubini, Mozart, and Verdi." He will talk about various pieces of art influenced by Catholicism's idea of Last Judgment, one of which is in the Sistine Chapel. He will also show various Requiem Mass pieces.

David Baronov will present in the fifth round-table Ethics and Logic. He has presented for several years.
He says the hardest part is that he doesn't know what the other presenters will say. The worst, he says, isn't when people have the "same dress," but when the presentations don't have anything in common.

To talk about John Fisher, James Simpson, a professor from Harvard, will speak about his book, "Burning to Read: English Fundamentalism and Its Reformation Opponent," which deals heavily with John Fisher. Simpson will close the event at 7 on Thursday.
Madigan said, "As far as we know we are the only college in the entire United States that celebrates this."
