Across the country, many colleges have sought to make their campuses "greener" in an attempt to help improve the environment.
A number of individuals at Fisher hope that our campus will join this league of schools dedicated to helping improve the environment.
A new year has brought a variety of new programs and initiatives to campus aiming to make the college more environmentally-friendly.
The goals of these programs range from removing water bottles from campus to helping the City of Rochester become a more eco-friendly environment.
"I think that we have a lot of people dedicated to improving the situation here," says Assistant Biology Professor Greg Cunningham. "We've done a lot of things on campus to make us more green."
Cunningham is among a group of faculty members who have sought to bring about new eco-friendly reforms for the campus. Among these reforms is a new initiative targeting the use of bottled water on campus.
The Water Bottle Challenge, a petition-driven campaign seeks to remove such brands of water from campus, which, among other benefits, would help reduce the environmental cost of transporting the products from outside the state to the college.
"I hope this is just one step," says Dr. Deborah Uman, one of the faculty members organizing in the challenge. "My other big hope is that (the program) gets taken up by students."
Student participation in the Water Bottle Challenge is critical for its success, yet students can also pitch in with other green programs on campus.
The Office of Residential Life has also made huge steps towards making green iniatives a part of every day practice.
"This year we worked to make RA training very environmentally conscious," Assistant Director of Residential Life, Stephanie Ketterl said. "RA's were asked to bring reusable water bottles to (a team building) ropes course trip. We also reduced the number of handouts given to RA's.
"We have made all the handouts available on blackboard, so they have 24 hour access to it, but as an office, we're saving trees and money by not printing so much."
