There are very few opportunities in life that can provide you with the sights, sounds and smells of active sport. Heart-stopping action driven by endless euphoric emotion surges through the veins of athletes as they compete for prizes like respect and greatness.

So it is easy to understand how a natural born athlete can develop quite different feelings when they are away from the game they love for a significant period of time. The worst of all of these feelings: regret.

Fisher sophomore Lindsey Pietras is looking to eliminate any reason for negative feelings as she has set her eyes on returning to the game of soccer she has loved for over 10 years.

Pietras has learned a lot on the field, spending all four years of high school on varsity with Frontier of Buffalo, but college soccer poses new challenges. It is an intricate technical game and enhanced with speed that you just can't find in high school or club soccer.

"Honestly, I have already learned so much," she said. "High school versus college soccer is like playing a totally different game. I am still learning."

The task at hand will not come easy. It is pretty simple what stands in between Pietras and a shot at a starting position on the varsity soccer team: competition. All around the competition will be tougher, whether it is the girls she is competing against to win a roster spot, or the heavy Empire 8 division teams looking to knock opponents off their game.

Pietras only wants to get better and as quickly as possible. Her weakness is rust from being out of the game for over two years and it has brought on some fears that were quickly dispelled by teammates.

"I hate being the weak link and I am afraid of bringing the team down," Pietras said. "I know for a while I will be the weaker player because I am still learning, but the team continues to reassure me that it is okay and that this is normal for returning players."

Teammate Megan Gee knows Pietras well from classes off the field and feels that Pietras has what it takes to succeed.
