Personal information for close to 2,000 current and prospective St. John Fisher College students may have fallen into the wrong hands as part of a security breach that involves a number of area colleges.
Buffalo State, SUNY Brockport and Monroe Community College were also affected when a laptop from SunGard, a college Information Technology provider, was reported stolen on March 13.
Anne Geer, director of marketing and communications at St. John Fisher, said that there were "nearly 2,000 names from Fisher's database on the laptop" that was stolen.
St. John Fisher mailed out letters to each of the affected Fisher students and encouraged them to monitor their financial records and watch for any suspicious activity. Among the data that was stolen were names and social security numbers.
"Those students who received a letter indicating their personal information was on the laptop should go to the website referenced in the letter and follow the recommendations in the 'ProtectingYour Credit' section," Geer said.
"In addition, SunGard, our IT provider, is sending out a second letter indicating that they will pay for 12 months of credit monitoring for each impacted person," she said. "The College recommends that those impacted should take advantage of this offer."

I am one of the people whose info was on that laptop, however, I don't consider myself a "prospective student", as I applied there nearly 4 years ago (chose not to go there-place sucks). (Continued…)

That's ridiculous.
Why DO they keep info for ppl that don't even go there??
This is messed up. Forget about the possibility of a shooter on campus - this is the unsafest I've felt at Fisher. (Continued…)
