What do the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Orbit gum commercials and the Beach Boys have in common? These topics were all crammed into one conversation between the members of Honor Bright, the opening act for Cartel at Spring Event this year.
Exhausted but upbeat after their van broke down on their way to St. John Fisher College, the five-piece self-proclaimed pop punk band relaxed before the show in their dressing room.
Fresh off tour, the Syracuse natives were psyched to be opening for Cartel, a band who they liken themselves to.
"It's so cool that a school like this would take a chance on a smalltown band like us," Liam DiCosimo, lead vocalist, said.
Tight-knit and upbeat, the band's passion for music and camaraderie play a role in their humorous banter and entertaining wit.
"The first tape I ever owned was Kriss Kross. And Boys II Men. Write down Kriss Kross because that sounds more badass," Tim Paige, on guitar and vocals, said.
"Mine was that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tape they gave out at Pizza Hut," Curt Henry, drummer, said.
"I had that too!" Ryan Gilmore, guitarist, said. This was followed by the boys humming a disorganized version of what was most likely a TMNT song.
Besides the band members' friendship with each other, they find inspiration for their music through a variety of circumstances.
"Life inspires us," Gilmore said. "Anything that makes us feel any kind of emotion."
"Tour inspires us," DiCosimo, who writes the lyrics along with Paige, said. "We are away from our families and friends and girlfriends, so we miss out on things being away. Anything we're away from inspires us."
This doesn't stop Honor Bright from having fun on the road, especially when touring with Holding Solace, another Syracuse-bred band. They Saran-wrapped their tourmates' entire van without them knowing. Their cheeky love of life explains the way Honor Bright formed as well.
The band began as a dream of DiCosimo and Anthony Merritt's [bass player], who had always wanted to make a pop/punk band. Paige was living with DiCosimo at the time, but all were either involved in other bands or solo projects. They put out a message online looking for a drummer, and found Henry, who was also in another band at the time.
