The St. John Fisher College golf team opened its spring season with a trip to the Jekyll Island Invitational in Jekyll Island, Ga., March 21-23.

The golfers' individual scores improved throughout the weekend as the Cardinals, ranked 11th in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf National College poll, checked in sixth out of 24 teams with a combined total of 909. Methodist University of North Carolina won with an 871.

Senior captain Nick Velasco said that the team, which finished the fall season 6-1, performed well, but not to its full potential.

"Everything went well and people played OK, but not great," he said. "We feel we could have done better, but it was a solid start to the spring season."

The Cardinals sat in ninth after the first day of competition on Friday with an 18-over-par 306. Sophomore James Ozello and senior Bobby McCartney each shot a 76 to lead Fisher. They checked in behind individual leader Nathaniel James of Washington and Lee, who shot a two-under-par 70.

Senior Scott Harris Jr. and sophomore Tom Muto each shot a 77 for Fisher, while Velasco checked in with an 80.

Freshman Joelle Sacheli, the only woman on the team, turned in an 83 competing as an individual on the women's side.

The following day, the Cardinals took four strokes off their team total, carding a combined 302 for a two-day total of 608. However, they remained in ninth overall. Velasco shaved a team-high five strokes off his opening-day round, recording a 75.

McCartney improved by two strokes, carding a 76. Harris also shot 76, and Muto turned in a 77 for the second day in a row.

Meanwhile, Sacheli carded a 76 in the women's competition.

Fisher shot a combined 301 on the final day of competition to finish with a 909, climbing to sixth in the final standings behind Methodist.

McCartney led the Cardinals, shooting another 74 to finish 13th in the individual standings. His 76-74-74 gave him a three-day total of 224.
