Michelle Miller, chair for Relay for Life at St. John Fisher College, is currently a junior. Working hard all year for the annual "One Night Stand," on April 5, Miller finds great value in participating in this cause she holds very near to her heart.

Q: When did you start doing Relay?

My first Relay was when I was a junior in high school. When I came to Fisher as a freshman I saw that there was a club called Colleges Against Cancer. I immediately knew that I wanted to be a part of that club, so as a freshman I became the Team Recruitment Chair. As a sophomore I moved up to Co-Chair and as a junior I am the Chair.

Q: Why do you Relay?

I relay for all of the people in this world who have cancer. However, my heart relays especially for my brother Chad Miller who passed away from cancer when I was a sophomore in high school. He was 28 years old and it was devastating to see him have to suffer like he did. Therefore, I relay so we can eventually find a cure for this horrible disease and so nobody else in this world has to suffer.

Q: What is your favorite part of Relay?

My favorite part of Relay is being able to see everyone have so much fun and work for the same common goal of raising lots of money to fight cancer. I also love being able to work with Nazareth College in planning for the event as it is the Fisher/Nazareth Relay for Life. It's fun to work with our so-called "rival" school in planning one of the biggest events in the fight against cancer.

Q: What is the hardest part of Relay?

The hardest part of Relay is working all year to put on the biggest event at Fisher. However, the hardest part is definitely the most rewarding in the end because it is an amazing feeling when it is all said and done to see the results of something that so much time and effort was put into.

Q: Besides the "One Night Stand," how many hours do you think you dedicate to Relay?

Well, it is hard to come up with a specific number of hours. However, I would have to say that on average I have spent at least three to five hours a day, seven days a week, since the beginning of the fall semester thinking about and preparing for Relay.

Q: What do you think of the Fisher participation in Relay? Have you seen increases, decreases, or has it been relatively even since your involvement with it here?

I am very pleased with the Fisher/Nazareth participation in Relay. I love seeing it grow. Two years ago there were about 300 people at Relay and we raised $25,000. Last year there were over 500 people at Relay and we raised over $53,000. This year we already have 74 teams, 576 participants and $28,745.76 raised and there are still 11 days before Relay. Our goal this year is to raise $75,000.

Q: How many are participating this year?

As of right now, 576 people registered, however there is there are still 11 days left before Relay so we are hoping that more people sign up. If you are an individual who has not signed up please do so at http://events.cancer.org/rflstjohnfishercollegeny.

Q: Have you already started planning for next year?

As of right now we have not started planning for Relay 2009 yet. We are putting our all into this year's Relay. However, as soon as Relay is over this year, we will begin planning for next year and Beth Griffith will take over as the Chair.

Q: Care to share anything else?

We would like all the support that we can get this year from the St. John Fisher College faculty and staff as well as the students. If anyone would like to support this great cause, please register or donate at http://events.cancer.org/rflstjohnfishercollegeny.

I would also like to say thank you to Steve Potter, our adviser; Kelly Rickard, our peer adviser; Sadie Mueller, our ACS Adviser; and the entire Relay for Life Committee for helping make this event possible.
